    Abstract

This article considers the representation of Jewish violence against Christ in medieval English sources. Religious accounts of violence were far from stable in the Middle Ages, often added to, elaborated, intensified, and sometimes reinterpreted; over the longue durée of the Middle Ages, we can discern an ongoing vitiation and degradation of the Jewish image based on Passion account and increasingly forceful ways of blaming the Jews for the death of Christ. This article explores the work of Nicholas Love in particular to consider how we make sense of this violent and apparently distasteful material that appears to have been so central to medieval culture.
