    Abstract

The Work-Based Learning subject area at Birkbeck has developed a range of modules and programmes which use reflection on experiential learning in the workplace as an integral part of the academic programme. In some modules demonstration of reflection on learning is part of the assessment (usually taking the form of a learning review), in others a reflective commentary is the single assessment for the module. The establishment of a pedagogy based on reflection has provided a number of challenges, among which are: students’ expectations that they will be taught, the need to demonstrate that students are achieving at appropriate levels in the absence of prescribed content, and the (relatively) limited awareness of the pedagogic debate relating to experiential learning and reflection. The session will share thoughts and experiences on these areas.
