    Abstract

A reference book on the concept of scientific theory and contemporary philosophy of Anglo-Saxon science, which still remains little known in France. The notion of theory is central to the philosophy of science. The definition of this concept has been the subject of considerable discussion among philosophers of science of the twentieth century, heirs and criticism of logical empiricism. Beyond their differences, these philosophers have in common the project to distinguish the content of the theories of their formulations, using tools from formal logic and mathematics. Marion Vorms in this book offers a critical examination of these formal approaches theories dominant in philosophy of science. It shows, through the detailed examination of cases of classical mechanics, which there are several formulations (Newtonian, Lagrangian, Hamiltonian), the content of the theories can be entirely distinguished from their formulations.
