    Abstract

Book synopsis: The functional aspect of the bridges, undoubtedly priority over any other constructive motivation, it has generally overshadowed the purely architectural nature, symbolic and aesthetic values as well as the diverse and significant urban implications. The essays collected in this volume - some of which are published in English and French - are written by authors from different disciplines. While not neglecting the functional necessity which prompted the construction of bridges, illustrate in a close the specifically architectural, constructive and plastic processes, the symbolic meanings, economic and urban performance, iconographic fortunes. The book surveys some famous water city with their bridges: the medieval bridges in France at the construction site of Michelangelo's Santa Maria bridge (today Ponte Rotto) in Rome; from the bridge of Castel Sant'Angelo at London Bridge; by the example of Verona between the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the bridges of Constantinople; Charles Bridge in Prague at Notre-Dame in Paris bridge. They are not left out the theoretical considerations, from Leonardo's investigations of the water motions to treatises compared to building practices in Renaissance and Baroque period.
