    Abstract

Through a rich study of original documentation of the religious brotherhoods, the author explores the relationship between the sacred and the profane in the Florence of the late Middle Ages. In the first part of the book, are carefully analyzed and with a wealth of unpublished data of the members of the faith practices - singing of hymns, flagellation, processions, funerals, commemorations of death and, above all, the public worship of the Madonna of Orsanmichele. In the second part, it is explored and assessed the contribution of charitable works for the poor of the city. The result is one of the most exemplary and detailed analysis of philanthropy and assistance in medieval Europe, in the context of the great social, demographic and economic aspects of Florence before and after the "Black Death"
