    Abstract

    Book synopsis: Poverty is endemic in human society, but its nature has changed over time. The book, which contains the proceedings of the conference dedicated to "forms of poverty and welfare innovations in Italy from the Middle Ages to the Present" (27 to 29 May 1999), organized as part of the celebrations for "Bologna 2000 European City of Culture", is dedicated to the analysis of welfare institutions in different historical periods have been appointed to tackle poverty and is organized in four sections. The first is dedicated to the birth of the first institutions of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; the second is centered on the consolidation and generalization of these institutions and others dedicated to particular objectives for assistance; The third explores the new Napoleonic era and the rise of the authority of self-help initiatives in the nineteenth century; the fourth, finally, examines the rise and decline of the welfare state.
