    Abstract

This article examines the value of the concept of political fidelity in understanding social relations within the Venetian patriciate between the 15th and 16th centuries, starting from the observation that the language of fidelity found little place in the political discourse of the time. On the one hand, the peculiarity of the relationship of the patrician group to power was not based on a hierarchy nevertheless necessary for the establishment of this type of relationship. On the other hand, the affirmation of the patricians' freedom, the early struggle against factionalism and the dissemination of contracts and formalized written commitments were all characteristics defining the patriciate that seemed to contradict the principles underlying fidelity.
