    Abstract

This article analyses the historical conditions for Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Bisexual (LGBT) people in Northern Ireland's recent history. The neglect of LGBT lives in historical analysis of Northern Ireland is examined. By ignoring the role of religion in the formation of sexual identities, and privileging secularity and liberalism in the formation of identities among sexual minorities, LGBT people in Northern Ireland have been neglected by historians. The place of religion and guilt are analysed in the struggle by LGBT people in the province to come to terms with their sexualities. Also, the place of religion and guilt are analysed as the framework for comprehending religiously-orientated homophobia, and as the impetus for evangelically inspired anti-LGBT campaigns, such as the 'Save Ulster from Sodomy!' campaign of the 1970s and 1980s.
