    Abstract

Book synopsis: Documentary was as important as fiction in the production of African Film Productions Ltd., the first South African studio. Funded by several departments of the new Federation of South African Union, AFP documentaries played a crucial role in developing a new conception of South Africa between 1910 and 1940. This role becomes evident when AFP documentaries are placed in the context of the South African legislative policy of the time.
