Abstract
Two current initiatives in the field of arts and humanities research have highlighted a strange paradox. ‘Practice-based research’ and the AHRC’s ‘Beyond Text’ programme both imply a challenge to assumptions that research will be ‘in’ conventional textual forms: that it will centre on the production of a ritualised work known as a thesis or dissertation.
