    Abstract

    Book synopsis: Nell'ambito del vasto panorama di studi internazionali sulla famiglia in età pre-industriale, la XL Settimana di studi promossa dalla Fondazione Datini ha esplorato il ruolo economico svolto dai componenti di questo fondamentale nucleo di sopravvivenza e di crescita della società. Sviluppandosi lungo il corso di cinque secoli ed esaminando le peculiarità proprie della diverse aree geografiche europee, le ricerche raccolte in questo volume analizzano le strategie economiche rivolte a far germinare e perpetuare fortune finanziarie e patrimoniali o anche semplicemente a salvaguardare e conservare il nucleo, ma anche le articolate funzioni economiche che, al suo interno, svolsero le varie componenti e le modalità con cui tali strategie si inserivano e interagivano in un contesto complesso di soggetti e di ceti sociali differenziati. In questo quadro, il volume non presenta solo una serie di nuovi studi sui singoli gruppi familiari, ma vuole anche e soprattutto far risaltare l'importante funzione collettiva della famiglia, che ebbe un ruolo significativo nella crescita, stasi o declino delle società dell'Europa preindustriale.

Translated abstract: As part of the vast panorama of international studies on the family in pre-industrial times, the XL Week of studies sponsored by the Foundation Datini explored the economic role played by the members of this fundamental core of survival and growth of the company. Developing over the course of five centuries and examining the peculiarities of the different geographical areas in Europe, the research collected in this volume analyze the economic strategies directed to germinate and perpetuate financial fortunes and property or simply to protect and preserve the core, but also articulated the economic functions that, at its core, played the various components and the ways in which these strategies were part and interacted in a complex environment of subjects and different walks of life. In this context, the volume not only presents a series of new studies on individual family groups, but also and especially want to highlight the important role of the family group, who played a significant role in the growth, stagnation or decline of European companies pre-industrial times.
