    Abstract

Results are reported from a postal survey of a community sample of young men and women age 17-1 8 from divorced and non-divorced families. Congruent with the results from previous research. adolescents from divorced backgrounds who were currently involved in a heterosexual relationship reported more emotionally distant father-child relationships. However. adolescents from divorced backgrounds who r e p i e d emotionally distant mother-child relationships were less likely to be involved in a heterosexual relationship, indicating that the quality of childhood relationships with both mothers and fathers in postdivorce families are important influences in adolescent relationship involvement. In contrast, the quality of parent-child relationships was not associated with relationship involvement among adolescents with married parents.
