    Abstract

This article complements previous research on the contemporary reception of Mme Riccoboni’s œuvre by analysing her reception in the nineteenth century. A range of attitudes regarding the literary value, the themes and the genre of her novels are examined focusing on a series of peritextual materials which have not previously been studied, notably, the prefaces and illustrations to nineteenth-century editions of her works. In their proximity to the published text, these peritexts both embody a kind of ‘reading’ (on the part of prefacier and illustrator), and influence the potential reader of each edition, thus providing us with a privileged source of evidence of the perception of Riccoboni’s novels in this period. In their engagement with the playful reflexivity of the novels, the illustrations provide a useful counterpoint to the prefatorial commentaries, which fail almost entirely to do justice to the novels’ thematic complexities and gender politics.
