    Abstract

Book synopsis: This is a controversial issue in several ways. There are still significant differences between the different research traditions in Europe , which affects both research interests and patterns of interpretation. Leading representatives of the International Medieval Research treat the different approaches in a broad diachronic and synchronous comparison. The aim of this volume is , on the one hand the sometimes limited national research traditions to pass on the matter and thus the other hand, extract the debate from the one-sided legal- institutional perspective of the older research to consider new ( ethnographic , cultural, textual ) aspects and take the central theme of the present volume , therefore, is less a solution to the terminological problem , whether the term 'state' for the early medieval kingdoms is applicable at all , but rather the question of how Europe in the first millennium AD, political integration was reached in order for a contribution to the study of the historical processes should be given, the Christian and secular institutions , the monarchy and the people helped establish those on regional communities and social structures in the interaction of monarchy and aristocracy in Europe, long continue on after the end of the Middle Ages has been established.
