    Abstract

The article offers an overview of how contemporary users of Anglo-Norman conceived, identified, and defined the dialect that they used. A close analysis of first-hand evidence for linguistic self-consciousness shows how attitudes to Insular French changed as the multilingual and multicultural contexts which conditioned its use developed over time.
