    Abstract

Scientists use models to draw inferences and acquire information about the phenomena that these models represent. To inform this usage models by scientists , I propose a new analytical tool , the concept of "format" representation , and I show that the specific format in which a model is presented is crucial to the type of reasoning it allows to drive. I conclude that the study of theoretical activity in general would benefit from paying attention to theoretical formats as well as representations underlying logical structures.
