Abstract
Book synopsis: The volume contains the proceedings of the Conference held in Florence in May 2004 and it portrays the story of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence in a time when the hospital is affected by an incisive functional restructuring, with the project of a museum aimed at enhancing its huge historical heritage. Santa Maria Nuova Italian hospitals is among the most popular in Europe from those who deal with the history of medicine and care. Its founding in 1288, dates back to the origins of the Italian health system and major medical faculty of the Italian University and has been a reference point for both the architecture for its artistic heritage. Wanted by the lavishness of a wealthy Florentine merchant, already the sixteenth century becomes the typological model thanks to a structure - consisting of a progressive composition perpendicular lanes - will arrive in 1574 to create quell'impianto 'cross' which will be a reference for buildings many Italian and European hospitals throughout the eighteenth century. The hospital buildings were part of the aesthetics of the Renaissance city: in this sense it explains the link between beauty and therapy mentioned in the title. At the Santa Maria Nuova hospital church and the chapels in the aisles become important centers for artistic patronage, involving the most significant artists of the period, such as the workshops of Niccolò Gerini, Angelico, Andrea Veneziano, Andrea del Castagno, later, the famous Flemish Hugo Van Der Goes.
