    Abstract

_Michael Field, Decadent Moderns: 1875-1914_ articulates why Michael Field, the joint- pseudonym of Katharine Bradley (1846 –1914) and Edith Cooper (1862 –1913), was such a radical, unique writer. With a distinct emphasis on inter-disciplinarity and historical consciousness, this collection of essays, written by internationally renowned critics and fresh new voices, reveals Michael Field’s vital and often provocative contribution to decadence and modernity as it unpacks the poet’s complicated formal innovations and cultural practices that would be key to the radical innovations of modernism. Chapters by Kate Thomas, Margaret Stetz, Ana Parejo Vadillo, Sarah Parker, Joseph Bristow, Catherine Maxwell, Alex Murray, Jill Ehnenn, Leire Barrera-Medrano, Kristin Mahoney, and Sarah Kersh situate Michael Field in the light of current critical work on sculpture, the arts, queer studies, cosmopolitanism, politics, form, disability studies, gender and sexuality, and aestheticism and its contested relation to modernism. Uniquely, the book examines the breadth of Michael Field’s writings, most notably their poetic dramas, as it explores the qualities that make Michael Field such an experimental and unique writer both within their own time and our own, indeed what made them distinctly modern.
