    Abstract

This article is a writing conversation with Clare Hemmings. It discusses Lewis' involvement in feminist politics in Britain, (including in the Brixton Black Women's Group) and explores the question of ‘what haunts’ in Lewis' past and present intellectual, psychic and academic lives. Central to this haunting is the reiterated performance of whiteness in otherwise radical contexts and by those who are otherwise committed to social justice. It is this paradox, a paradox that Lewis continues to find unintelligible, that has driven her own quest for an ethics of practice that might undergird the pursuit of social justice in coalition.
