This working paper uses London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics as a starting point to examine the increasing integration of sport in contemporary urban cultural policy. By investigating the connections between sport and culture, this paper attempts to highlights issues about the ‘value’ of culture in cultural policy today. The paper draws attention to four key parallels sport shares with culture namely its historical connection, their problematic definitions, the ‘uselessness’ of both activities and how sport and culture are both perceived to be able to contribute to the social and economic agenda. Through a brief analysis of the key documents pertaining to London’s bid and subsequent awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games, the paper raises questions about how this integration of sport into urban cultural policy today can affect the ways in which cultural provision is currently promoted and funded.
