    Abstract

Charles J. Haughey remains the most compelling figure of modern Irish politics. There are many reasons for this, not least his charisma, the grandiose lifestyle, the sense that here was a politician of enormous potential with vision and extraordinary ambition not just for himself but for his country. That at least was how his followers regarded him. Others saw something else. Although many adored him just as many were suspicious of his motives and the source of his wealth. Based on real events, CHARLIE chronicles the political and public life of Charles J. Haughey from his successful bid for the leadership of his party and country in 1979 to his departure from politics in 1992. This Episode details the years 1979-81.
