Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text Postcards Competition – deadline extended!

The arrival date for entries is now the 4 February.
There is no entry fee and the competition is open to all.
For full details of how to enter, see our website.

There is no need to put your entry in the post if you’re at Sussex: please submit your Postcard to the English School Office - Arts B 133 - in a sealed envelope with all the relevant information included (see website), marked ‘Picture this Postcards Competition’.

The Picture this Postcards Competition welcomes any and all kinds and varieties of writing - critical prose, aphorism, autobiography, confession, musings, joke, cartoon, fiction, non-fiction, poetry – anything that can fit onto a standard sized postcard and is addressed to someone (the address will be judged as part of the fictional content); the pictorial aspect of the postcard can include or be any and all kinds of varieties and forms of original artwork, a found image or collection of images, or a commercial picture postcard – antique or contemporary.

Postcards will be judged on the success of the interaction between the two sides – how well their visual and verbal/textual elements work together – by the novelist Nicola Barker, whose latest novel Burley Cross Postbox Theft is a wickedly comic epistolary. Further special mention on the winning entries will be made by professionals involved in the literary and visual arts at an evening event on the 24th March at the Creativity Zone, part of the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, which will announce the winners with readings, projections and an exhibition.

Winning Postcards will be published – on the website of the publishers Myriad Editions and in the online academic interdisciplinary journal Excursions.

We look forward to receiving your work!
The Postcards Competition is run in collaboration with Myriad Editions.

P.S. Postcards Competition event
Although the competition is running alongside the Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text conference (24th-26th March at Sussex), you don’t have to be attending the conference to enter the Postcards Competition, or to come along to the Postcards event. The Creativity Zone venue will also host an exhibition. Amongst the responses to the Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text conference have been photographic and cinematic epistolaries, proposals for animations, art-objects, and various other projects and works that have prompted us to mount an exhibition related to and questioning the concerns of the conference. Please feel free to contact us for more information about the exhibition if it's of interest:
enquiries@postcards-letters.org.uk.

P.P.S. Registration for the conference is now open.
Our keynotes are: Ann Dumas (Curator of The Real Van Gogh, Royal Academy); Professor Nicholas Royle (Sussex); and Professor Marcus Wood (Sussex).

The conference will also host panel presentations, and discussion and other forums to investigate: letters and postcards as embodied, inhabited objects, including in museums and archives; postal delivery systems and diaspora; reciprocal relations between verbal and visual arts; and mutating epistolaries in fiction, and through recent theorisations.
The conference registration fee includes a number of other associated events including: writing workshops with Myriad authors Jonathan Kemp and Sue Eckstein; a research skills seminar held at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery with the curator of photographs Kevin Bacon, based on their archived objects; a workshop on the value of everyday writings to the community with John Riches of QueenSpark Books; discussions on epistolary film-making; and a collaborative workshop on the correspondence between words and images (this final workshop TBC).

Thanks,
The Picture this: postcards and letters beyond text organisers and committee
Katie Reid and Bethan Stevens, Nicola Ashmore, Robin Bagon, Naomi Booth, and Martin Eve.
