Best operating system ever??"If you don't use Firefox, then no, you can't use Zotero. This does not mean that the software is not the best in its class, it just means that you don't have the infrastructure to support it - sorry, but I stand by what I said! :P - id: 27 author: AJ Cann author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjoxNzoyNyArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjoxNzoyNyArMDEwMA== content: Yes, I'm sure Zotero is very good, but it may not be a question of "don't use Firefox". Many workplaces insist that users rely on Internet explorer - not everyone has a choice. - id: 28 author: Martin Eve author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjoyOToyMSArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjoyOToyMSArMDEwMA== content: ! 'I see the problem (IT departments, in particular, want to be encumbered with updates and support for as limited a range of software as possible) and I know that there is already a Gnome client for Zotero (see: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/10824/gnotero/ )...Ideally they would move to some form of standalone platform (as per http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/7327/feature-request-stand-alone-zotero/ ). However, the changes necessary to implement the huge portions that are handled by Firefox seem to render this impracticable. Are you using/have you tried CiteULike? I certainly think the social aspect of CUL has worked out better than Zotero. However, I don''t want to use/pay for EndNote when Zotero does the job for me, for free. I appreciate somewhat more now that I am in a privileged position being free to choose OS/browser but perhaps, if enough software is developed that depends upon other platforms, the IT departments will eventually have to concede some freedom to their users.' - id: 29 author: AJ Cann author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjozMzoyMiArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNjozMzoyMiArMDEwMA== content: ! 'Sorry, I didn''t phrase that right...What I meant was: how do you get the collections from CiteULike into an actual paper on which you are working and have them manageable (ie. with the ability to switch referencing styles)?' - id: 33 author: AJ Cann author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNzoxOTozMSArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNzoxOTozMSArMDEwMA== content: Yes, I thought that's what you meant. I export from CuL as "Formatted Text" then bung it into Word. Most reliable system I've ever used - much more-so than Endnote, which always needed post-insertion fiddling. - id: 34 author: RuthFT author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNzo1NTo0NCArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xMyAxNzo1NTo0NCArMDEwMA== content: I have to admit I am a big Zotero fan. But not enough to pay for storage space online to upload my references. Perhaps it's being a humanities researcher, but I went over the initial MB limit immediately, and I don't think the cost of more is particularly good. So for me, the social aspect isn't working that well.I already use separate browsers for personal and academic work (otherwise I'd just be drowning in tabs!), so this works really well for me! I'm not sure exactly how it'll work when I try and do my final formatting though - at the moment I don't see any easy way of altering the formatting of references and my university has a very particular style. Still, best free bibliographic software so far! - id: 35 author: leroyh author_email: '' author_url: '' date: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xNSAyMzozODozNiArMDEwMA== date_gmt: !binary |- MjAxMC0wMy0xNSAyMzozODozNiArMDEwMA== content: I am also an avid fan of Zotero. I find it makes much sense in making technology work for me. A major reason for me is the cite while you write plug in. If there was some way of linking my delicious or Zoxmarks book marks to my Zotero. Anyone here use LaTex? Its used mainly in computer science but I think its a great open source text editor that would make things easier. ---
In the spirit of social networking/research interaction, I have
established a Zotero group for researchers working in my field; the
novels of Thomas Pynchon.
The site is here: http://www.zotero.org/groups/thomas_pynchon
If you haven't used Zotero before, it's the ultimate open-source, freely
available citation tool. It will do all the hard work of formatting your
citations and even share them across multiple computers. It works with
OpenOffice and MS Word, so you are well catered for.
Feel free to add to the list of works; I will certainly be updating it
as I work.
