This is a post that I have found very difficult to write, because it puts me in a conflicted position.
A while back, in light of the Troy Davis execution, which profoundly upset me, I promised to boycott travel to any region that implemented the death penalty. This has proved, in light of contractual work commitments, to be impossible for me. Although it is an issue to which I am deeply committed, I have had to renege on this pledge and I want, instead, to modify it to a pragmatic level. I will not travel for leisure to any region that implements the death penalty.
I did not enjoy writing that and I'm sure there's scope to brand me a hypocrite. In recognition of this, I'm going to up my contributions to Amnesty and continue to promote the cause. Pragmatism won against my idealism.
