Abstract

The medieval Venetian maritime trade can be considered in terms of either ‘‘public sector’’ (the merchant galleys) or ‘‘private sector’’ (the ship-owners practising their commercial activities independently). This paper explains how this distinction was made in the past, and how it could be made nowadays. Then, it analyses the development of public and private commercial shipping from the end of the 15th century, and the general evolution of Venetian maritime transport. It concludes that as the public galley organisation disappeared, the private sector became stronger, the latter being more suited to the economical and political context of the time.
