    Abstract

Beginning provocatively with the sentence, ‘The one time I had an opportunity to meet Martin Amis, I ended up taking heroin instead.’ This piece evokes what it was like to be a young woman working in the male-dominated (or to put it more succinctly the McEwan-Amis-Rushdie dominated) British literary world of the 1990s. But an extra sense of discomfort is added by being not just a woman but a queer woman. When my friend Barbara calls to say she has found some discarded bags of heroin under a bush and doesn’t know what to do with them, I weigh up going to her aid with missing the Martin Amis dinner I had been honoured with an invitation to. This is another in the series of essays towards a collection called 'Sermons'.
