Abstract

Individualism brought society to a state where politeness replaced roughness. It may be that masks of politeness are just masks and that we mean all the worst about each other behind external polite behavior, but masks are a necessary condition for social cohesion. Maintaining civilisation in behavior, however played, is essential to ensure that society does not slip into widespread chaos and violence.
