Abstract
This article considers the series of illustrations to three nineteenth-century editions of 'Julie, ou La Nouvelle Héloïse' as specific forms of reaction to the original novel, and also to their own artistic and literary contexts. Taking illustrations by Achille Devéria (1826), Tony Johannot (1845), and Edmond Hédouin with Adolphe Lalauze (1889) as case studies, this article argues that in their specific choices of subject-matter, iconographical representation, and captions, these series of illustrations provide a very particular form of relay between model, copy and reader. Not only do they constitute ‘readings’ of the text (its themes, elements of its form, and its generic affiliation), but they also anticipate the horizon of expectations of their readers, and in their selective representation of the novel, affect the reading encounter.
