Abstract
Book synopsis: This book brings together historians, anthropologists and other social scientists who have developed research within the contemporary history of Portugal. But instead of just giving account of the history of a people, their characteristics and their attributes, also seeks to think the question that gives it its title: how to make a people? That is, processes that formed the very idea of people, irrespective of the purpose with which it asserts its existence, purpose that can both pass through the celebration of the people, which usually happens with "our" people, or their censorship , which not seldom happens to the people of 'other'.
