Green, Viviane (2012) Book review: 'The Thinking Heart'. The Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Abstract
This is an important book written by a pioneer in the field of child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy and is the expression of a life time’s psychotherapeutic work with disturbed children with marked developmental deficits. These are not the worried well but those on the autistic spectrum, or those who have experienced cumulative trauma and/or neglect. In the final chapter, Further Reflections, Alvarez emphasizes that diagnostic categories, whilst helpful, do not always reflect the sheer complexity of cases most child psychotherapists now see in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services or in the voluntary sector and in private practice.
