    Abstract

When the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa erupted in August 1883, it sent a vast column of dust and ash into the stratosphere, causing lurid discoloration to skies around the world. British Poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote a series of little-known letters to the science journal Nature, describing the phenomenon; letters that constituted the majority of the handful of writings that he published in his lifetime.
