Abstract
Since its establishment in 1977, the Cambridge Journal of Economics has been a ground-breaker in the publication of historical, theoretical, empirical and policy-oriented papers on alternative forms of industrial organization. Important among these are local and regional productive systems. Although there is now a wide and multi-disciplinary literature focusing on how to analyse and explain such systems – aside from Alfred Marshall’s pioneering work on the English industrial districts of the 19th and 20th century – contemporary mainstream economics has largely ignored them (Schmitz 1999, p. 468). This collection of articles has been put together to celebrate 40 years of the Cambridge Journal of Economics.
