    Abstract

In this paper we look at bargaining offers made by buyers on MercadoLibre-Ecuador, a virtual marketplace. The study is based on a corpus of exchanges between buyers and sellers in a public space provided by the site. We examine the realization of offers as both micro acts under the categories of reduced-price and exchange/bartering offers, and as macro acts with respect to their occurrence with supportive moves (Blum-Kulka et al., 1989), with a mitigating or reinforcing function. We consider the medium of interaction and features of the MercadoLibre platform, among other factors, that appear to influence bargaining on MercadoLibre and the formulation of the offers examined. We found that bargaining in the context examined is normally realized over two turns, therefore displaying a simpler structure than what has been described for face-to-face interaction (cf. Prego Vázquez, 1999). However, we also found that a range of moves can be condensed in the offer turn (e.g. greetings, offer, justification, expressions of thanks, etc.); this is unlike face-to-face interaction where those moves would usually be realized over various turns. As such, the study shows how bargaining has been adapted to the online medium.
