Abstract
Event synopsis: The rise of the regulatory state and the changing nature of law and authority will be amongst the themes under scrutiny and debate at Kent Critical Law Society’s annual conference on 1st and 2nd March. The conference, entitled ‘The Society of Control: Interrogating Law, Governance and Regulation’ will host more than 40 presenters from across the UK and Europe over two days with keynote speakers including Frank Furedi and Andreja Zevnik (University of Manchester), Chris Kinsey (Kings College) and Illan Rua Wall (University of Warwick). Organised by Kent Critical Law Society (KCLS), a student society which provides a forum for critical analysis and debate about law and society, the event is being held at Keynes College and includes two lunches and a dinner which are open to all. KCLS President, Harley Ronan, said: “The conference is a two day flagship event that attracts legal academics and practitioners from across the country to come and present and discuss aspects of their work. It's an amazing two days where you can meet students and legal experts working in a range of areas, make contacts and learn about the latest developments. Our students often secure work experience placements and more through the networking opportunities. “The theme this year is 'The Society of Control' and is looking at the role of law in a society where other forms of governing and controlling the population are increasingly prominent. If you're taking Public Law II it's extremely pertinent to the special study.” Over the course of both days, a variety of panels, comprising academics, practitioners and law students, will critically examine themes that include: governance of urban space; regulation of protest; management of Higher Education; global law and governmentality; regulation of gender and sexuality; and private warfare and security.
