Abstract
This Chapter looks at the genealogy of representations of persona. The Roman imago subjected persona to a spiritual domain regulated by ancestry. Modern representations have removed personality from such concerns. The shift in our understanding of how the law regulates representations of personality occurred as a result of the debates around the admissibility of x-rays. In slightly different terms, this shift can be addressed as a shift from the dignity associated with the imago to an existential shame associated with the naked x-ray image.
