Abstract
Book synopsis: Previous models of the control of complex sequential routine activities are limited in that either a) they do not include a learning mechanism, or b) they do not include an interface with deliberative control systems. We present a recurrent network model that addresses these limitations of existing models. The current model incorporates explicit goal units and uses simulated reinforcement learning to acquire simultaneously both action sequence knowledge and knowledge of associated goals and hierarchical structuring. It is demonstrated that, in contrast to existing models, the revised model may both acquire task sequences and be controlled at multiple levels by biasing appropriate goal units.
