Abstract
Book synopsis: This volume aims to examine the nature of compassion and its role in the aesthetic experience by asking a series of questions related to emotion. What is the role of compassion in public debate in the western world? How is compassion different from other emotions, such as empathy, sympathy, or compassion? How did the ancient Greeks and Romans understand the concept of sympathy? What is the place of compassion in diseases and medical care? How are empathy and compassion involved with works of art? Can we push the development of compassion through art? The authors of the book attempt to provide an overview of compassion and its role in the aesthetic experience.
