Abstract
Among the few pieces of writing that Gerard Manley Hopkins published in his lifetime were a series of five letters to the science journal Nature, describing various meteorological phenomena, including the volcanic skies associated with the Krakatoa eruption of 1883. This article explores these little-known letters, positioning them in their historical and scientific contexts, as well as in the context of the development of Hopkins's poetic engagement with landscape and environment.
