Abstract
With the wide range of modelling methodologies available for the determination and analysis of hydrology and slope stability processes there is a need to establish the appropriate domain space for different model types. The suggestion that certain models may be inappropriate in certain circumstances is rarely an element that is evident in published research designs and applications. This paper seeks primarily to argue for such a recognition of appropriate domain space and secondly to undertake a prototype investigation distilled from some 8000 simulation scenarios undertaken using both a static analysis for stability and a dynamically coupled hydrology-slope stability model. Illustrative results show appropriate domain spaces can be rationally determined for these two differing schemes. The research reported is of significance to a wide range of environmental modelling and process issues. In a general context the research identifies that, for slope stability modelling, the most suitable analytical model is dependent upon specific environmental parameters that control the processes of stability. Accordingly, unless the appropriate model is used, there is the possibility of incorrect process conclusions being drawn. We have thus identified the most suitable stability analysis methodologies for slopes having specified geometrical and soil characteristics in order that the minimum factors of safety are accurately defined. This approach we believe ensures a better appreciation of environmental process controls on slope stability processes.
