Abstract
The paper explores place and performance in seventeenth-century provincial England. It takes the contexts of performance disclosed or suggested by the texts of Derbyshire writer Leonard Wheatcroft and music master Thomas Whythorne as its central examples. Using this material, and responding to critical writing on place, it develops a thesis concerning the place of performance in seventeenth-century village life.
