Abstract
While political discourse often emphasizes the distinction between the public good and private interests at the end of the Middle Ages, the study of the economic practices of the Venetian nobles obliges us to consider the question in a different way. Thanks to original economic systems, the nobles succeeded in satisfying a public mission, constituting the very definition of their status, without neglecting their own interests. The analysis of three of these systems (commercial navigation, land investment and public debt) makes it possible to reconsider the practical and discursive relationship between the "public" and the "private" in the Venetian economy of the late Middle Ages.
