    Abstract

This article focuses on the clinical report on the four-hour analytical treatment of an elective mutistic boy. Particular attention will be paid to the aspects of the treatment relationship which were conducive to the development of the boy. The role played by the analyst as a new object in the development of the child is highlighted with particular reference to the way in which it links early childhood patterns of relationships to the primary object. It is shown that the non-verbal aspects in the therapeutic relationship with the new developmental object enable the child to reshape his inner world of objects in such a way that the venture to explore himself and be explored by the others can be allowed. Finally, a link is established between the considerations on therapeutic change and research results of new toddlers such as Daniel Stern regarding early interactions.
