    Abstract

On the 17 November 1992 Audre Lorde, Black lesbian feminist socialist mother of two, died at her home in St Croix, US Virgin Islands after a fourteen-year fight against cancer. During her life she dedicated herself to the struggle against injustice and centred much of her writing and activism on the difficult but urgent task of recognizing and utilizing difference. In pursuit of this she stood out as a foundation stone and beacon and we can think of no more apposite a dedication for this issue than to offer it to the continuation of Audre's spirit. We offer here a few words in which she speaks for herself
