Abstract
This essay provides an overview of the research sources on the Middle East currently available in Spanish universities, libraries and research centres. A century‐and‐a‐half of Spanish scholarship on the Middle East (as we shall see below, mainly concerned with the Arab world)1 has produced a considerable number of institutions dedicated to the study of this region and its relationship to the Iberian peninsula. Most of these emerged out of specific conjunctures in contemporary Spanish history, and their development was in turn strongly conditioned by the social and political upheavals which Spain has undergone during this century. This experience has produced three broad types of institutions: universities; official government bodies; and independent research centres/non‐governmental organisations (NGOs). Although there is considerable historical overlap between them, the ascendancy of each kind of organisation roughly corresponded to a specific period in Spanish history.
