Abstract
The High Altar of the Cathedral of Astorga (1558-1563), constitutes a watershed in the evolution of altarpieces in Counter-Reformation Spain. This is the first documented work in Spain by the painter, sculptor and architect Gaspar Becerra (Baeza, c.1520-Madrid, 1568). His innovative language acquired in the workshops of Giorgio Vasari and Daniele da Volterra and his connections with influential associates and patrons in Rome were the key elements to Becerra's success in securing the commission for this prestigious and monumental work.
