Abstract
Book synopsis: Working with one's own image abroad was in some ways an obsession of the Germans. In the Federal Republic of Germany and in the GDR, debates were conducted on how both states and their social representatives should present themselves outside their own borders, but also on their own land for foreign countries. To what extent did these discussions, which take place against the backdrop of the Nazi past and the contemporary system competition in the East-West conflict, serve to assure oneself? In what way did the reference to foreign countries shape a modern self-image? An attitude of restraint marked the German cultural diplomacy: Just think of the downfall Willy Brandt 1970 in Warsaw.
