Abstract
Book synopsis: The volume deals with historical and current forms and functions of cinema as a place of gathering and entertainment. This includes a look at the architecture and the cultural anchorage of cinema as well as the cinema program, its genres, mission statements and stars. On the one hand, it is about the happenings on the screen and in the mysterious dark room, where cinema and film are experienced in a random collective, and, on the other hand, the nature of this experience, bringing the spectator and the reception into the focus of attention. This includes considerations on the future of film and cinema in the age of digitization and networking. The presentations on European and American cinema are supplemented by contributions to China, India and Egypt.
