    Abstract

Book synopsis: The work of Marcel L'Herbier is in many respects rather poorly known. Most often, he is presented only as one of the pioneers of the French avant-garde of the 1920s, alongside Gance, Delluc, Dulac and Epstein, ignoring or neglecting what he did next. However, if the place that L'Herbier occupies in the "First Wave" of French cinema (1918-1929) is indeed considerable, both in terms of aesthetic theory, experimental achievements, and innovations in collaborations with artists. other arts (literature, painting, music, architecture ...), its abundant subsequent production is also interesting. It bears witness in various respects to the prevailing trends in genres, themes and aesthetic biases in the 1930s and 1940s. In addition, the role of Marcel L'Herbier as a producer, defender of the film profession, his action in the Society of Film Authors, the Cinémathèque française, the Idhec he founded, as well as his commitment to the emergence of television after the Second World War, make it incontestably a central figure of cinematography in France. It was therefore necessary to return today to the long and exceptional career of Marcel L'Herbier. Especially since most of his films are now restored and visible, and that remains a very important amount of public and private archives concerning him. Such a re-examination presupposes, of course, avoiding the flaws of a purely biographical study in favor of problematized analyzes of the different aspects of his work. This is what the contributors to this book are committed to. In most of the texts collected here, a historical perspective has been favored, but other approaches have also been chosen to allow for a broader reflection. This book is sold with a DVD with the film Marcel L'Herbier the Devil in the heart, restored by the CNC Film Archives, for which was created an original composition of Pierre and David Mancinelli (piano and violin) and Michel Perez (double bass).
