Abstract

What makes the technosphere a unique element is its apparent capacity to tame chance by reducing the scale of the game of being to that of a superficial and measurable plane as well as rule-like standards. If so, the hidden meaning of an early-modern painting by Gonzalez Velazquez lies in its demonstration of the shifting of the scales of the heavens and the earth and everything in between into an equal measure of distribution and visibility, a standard, on one and the same plane. Timespace and everything in between, including peoples, become in this representation ready-at/to-hand, a standing reserve not only of labour-energy but also of time. In that sense, the techno-sphere may be seen as a variation on older magical-rituals such as mundus patet that allow societies to navigate antinomies, uncertainty, in the dynamic (force/action) between form and matter. The paper argues that this shifting to scale (the same plane and the same beginning) establishes the same, what is current and presently a state, the state we’re in, iteration and repetition, the current and currency itself, as a frame or the reality-setting of what seems absolute. How do we move away from such a framework, in the process freeing the possibilities for hope and a more integral humanity?
