Abstract
Taking a variational pragmatics perspective (Schneider & Barron, 2008), this paper examines regional variation in how sellers in Mercado Libre Ecuador and Mercado Libre Venezuela, two subsidiaries of Mercado Libre, an online marketplace, carry out refusals of bargaining offers made by buyers. The focus is on the mobile telephones market domain from which our corpora were extracted. The results show both similarities and differences. For example, explicit refusals were preferred across the two data sets. However, some differences were found at the level of sub-strategies. Both groups showed a preference for mitigating supportive moves, but Ecuadorians were found to use them more frequently while Venezuelans used more aggravating supportive moves. These findings are interpreted with reference to various cross-cultural dimensions of variation (cf. House, 2000).
